It was designed by Walter Sykes George (1881-1962), with significant early input from Sir Edwin Lutyens, the builder of New Delhi. The house was designed for the wealthy Hindu banker Sultan Sing, but his untimely death before the project was completed resulted in it being sold to the maharajah of Patiala.
